About Fetal Doppler Machine | Portable Fetal Heart Monitor

A foetal doppler machine helps healthcare professionals listen to the baby’s heartbeat during routine antenatal checks. It uses low-intensity ultrasound to detect movement of the foetal heart and converts the signal into audible sound. Many models also display the foetal heart rate on a screen.

The device supports professional observation. It must not replace antenatal visits, ultrasound scans, laboratory tests or the clinical judgment of a doctor or midwife.

The probe sends high-frequency sound waves into the abdomen. When the waves meet the moving foetal heart, the returning echo changes in frequency. The device converts this change into the heartbeat sound the user hears.

Detection depends on gestational age, the baby’s position, the mother’s body type, the amount of gel used and the quality of the device. A heartbeat is commonly detectable from about 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy, but it may be heard later in some cases. Not hearing a heartbeat does not by itself indicate a problem.

A foetal doppler is not a diagnostic device and should not be used as a substitute for professional prenatal care. Use should be brief and occasional, and follow the doctor’s advice. Prolonged or excessive scanning should be avoided.

If the mother notices reduced foetal movement or has any concern about her baby’s wellbeing, she should contact her doctor or midwife immediately. She should not rely on a home device for reassurance.

In India, foetal dopplers and other ultrasound devices must never be used to determine the sex of the baby. Sex determination is prohibited under the PCPNDT Act.
