The drum is also known as a sterilisation drum or autoclave drum. Its design, number of vents and closing mechanism differ between manufacturers.
During sterilisation, the band is turned or moved so that the holes in the band line up with the holes in the drum wall, allowing steam to reach the contents. Once the cycle is complete, the band is turned back to close the holes so that the contents are protected from the environment.
